Horsehair Raku

Gallery

Horsehair Raku is the signature ceramic art form of Bending Pines Pottery. Each vessel is individually crafted by ceramic artist Ken Maddux and transformed through a unique firing process that captures the natural imprint of horsehair and other organic materials on the surface of the clay.

At approximately 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, horsehair, feathers, leaves, and other natural elements are carefully applied to the ceramic surface, creating one-of-a-kind carbon markings and patterns. No two pieces can ever be duplicated, making each Horsehair Raku vessel a singular work of art.

Many of these vessels are part of Ken's Vessel Series—created as meaningful expressions of remembrance, connection, and legacy. These handcrafted vessels honor the lives, stories, and relationships that shape us, offering a unique way to preserve memories through the enduring beauty of clay and fire. Each commemorative vessel is created with intention, whether selected from available works or developed as a personal commission.

These expressive vessels reflect the relationship between clay, fire, nature, and the artist's hand. Many pieces are available for collectors, galleries, and private commissions.

Nature lets me write…

Earth, through hands and into fire.

Fire pens the last word.
