HorseHair Raku
request a commission
As word of my horsehair raku work has spread within the horse and riding community, I have received numerous requests for pieces to memorialize four-legged friends that have passed, and horse friends. Requiring only a small amount of hair, this can offer a heartfelt lasting tribute. Pieces can vary in size, and form but are somewhat restricted, due to the application of the hair or other materials to the piece. Forms range from plates, bowls, vases, to lidded jars. The hair, resulting in black lines, is applied at 1,100 degrees Fahrenheit. What remains is the carbon imprint on a typically white background. There are no glazes used in this process. The surface feel is a luscious glossy surface obtained by burnishing between each of 3 coats of liquid clay (terra sigillata) painted on the piece before it is fired. While called, “horsehair” raku, I don’t restrict myself to the hair alone. I enjoy experimenting with different natural materials in my work. From sugar, feathers, and leaves, to porcupine quills, flower blossoms, and pine needles, each imparts a different carbon imprint to the piece.
If you wish to have me make a piece for you, or to commission a piece to be given as a gift, please start a commission inquiry.
